Old Paint, Freakwater's
4th record was recorded
by Brad Wood and the band
in Chicago's Idful
Studios in May 1995 and
was mastered in Memphis
at Ardent by Larry Nix.
It is the first record
with fourth member Bob
Egan, who would later go
on to join Wilco.
Old Paint moves the band
out of the shadow of
previous records where
albums were dominated by
a balance of cover songs
and originals. Old Paint
displays a healthy batch
of some of Cathy's finest
songwriting moments with
tracks like
"Hero/Heroine", "Smoking
Daddy" and "Waitress
Song". Also in place
more than ever is the
vocal partnership between
Cathy and Janet who began
over 13 years ago. They
are clearly comfortable
harmonizing as is most
emphatically demonstrated
by their choice of
recording their vocals,
guitars and bass at once
rather than using
overdubs.
