94diskont is a
document that should be
viewed in conjunction
with systemisch, Oval's
previous record. The cd
centers around "do
while", a 24 minute track
origionally composed for
their 8 channel, 128
speaker modular sound
instillation "wohnton"
(translates to home tone)
in a stereo mixdown.
Whonton was shown all
throughout Europe between
1994 and 1996 on various
occasions ranging from
art exhibitions to Techno
raves. The main track
is followed by five
offensively complex
tracks, including two
bonus tracks, previously
unavailable in the US and
completed by a re-edited
excerpt of "do-while".
The vinyl version is
accompanied by a full
scale remix LP featuring
an exceptional variety of
assorted remix-
confrontations, versions,
re-considerations and
edits by Jim O'Rourke,
Mouse On Mars, Scanner
and Christian Vogel.
With 94Diskont, Oval
radically re-define their
unique deconstructive
methods breaking entirely
new ground in the narrow
margin between
deconstruction and
reconstruction assault
and aesthetics, features
and bugs. 94diskont is
meant rather as an
aesthetic than a rigidly
theoretical effort,
offering a more
offensive, yet highly
accessible scope of
miniature sound clusters,
embedded into
arrangements far more
heterogenous and
conflicting than any of
their previous
recordings.
With this album, Oval are
again skipping through
the remnants of concepts
like music and musicality
(as well as creativity)
of contemporary digital
music media,
highlighting problematic
constellations alongside
the way. 94diskont, is
another display of Oval's
radical and disobident
deconstructive pop
approach; it's
desktop-recording-
politics rendered an
elegant 44.1 KHZ sound
design. The more than
acceptable face of
contemporary digital
hardware discourse.
