Feels Like the Third Time

Thrill Jockey
Thrill 010 - 1993

1993 : Thrill Jockey releases Freakwater’s Feels Like the Third Time, an undisputed classic of the alt-country/Americana scene. In print on CD since it’s release, the vinyl version has been sadly unavailable since the early 90’s, as the record plant burnt down after our initial order of vinyl arrived. This 2012 edition is presented in a deluxe old-style tip-on jacket (just as the original) and was remastered to vinyl by Roger Seibel at SAE Mastering. Also included for the first time is a free download card.

Feels Like The Third Time was Freakwater’s first record for Thrill Jockey and was recorded with Brad Wood at the now infamous (and closed) Idful Studios. The record opens with ”My Old Drunk Friend”, perhaps the greatest song Hank Williams never wrote and features seven originals and five covers of songs by the likes of Conway Twitty, Woody Guthrie and Nick Lowe. The back cover features a classic photo of the band in front of Alcala’s Western Wear on Chicago Ave in Chicago. This is the record that solidified Freakwater as an up and coming voice in the world of country music, as well as being one of the records that helped kick start the whole No Depression/Americana craze.

From our 1994 mailorder catalog : “Knockin on the Carter family coffin, these Louisville sirens make us weep with joy.”
