“On May 5, Baltimore-based label Friends Records will put out a split 7″ between local noisemaker Jason Urick and Co La, the sample-abstractionism project manned by Ecstatic Sunshine’s Matthew Papich. Co La’s contribution, “See in the Dark”, backs Urick’s dark drone fantasy “Show Me”.” – Larry Fitzmaurice, Pitchfork
“Every time I listen to Matthew Papich’s Co La project, I imagine him as some voiceless character– wearing the same shades and suit in every adventure– suavely making his way through anything in a shiny red Thunderbird while the stereo blares a skipping Avalon CD through thick reverb. The only stops that get made are to smoke a purple cigarette with a thousand refined and beautiful ladies on a yacht, or to very slowly open a bottle of wine at the drive-in. But his latest off a split 7″ with Jason Urick, “See In The Dark,” eschews his typically bright exotica for something… errr… darker? Scratchy mutations of alien tongue stutter in and out of focus to the coy, jazzy slinking of the drums; a bass plays it sly, upping the tension with just one repeated octave. Burning One For New Espionage, baby.” – Matt Sullivan, Ad Hoc
