The haunting soundtrack of Odol Ilargia (Blood Moon) represents a remarkable collaboration between Elena Setién and Rüdiger (Felix Buff), whose musical synergy perfectly elevates the series' dark, melancholic atmosphere. The Basque mystery-thriller follows a gripping plot centered on local secrets and psychological tension, a narrative depth that the composers mirror through an intricate blend of delicate melodies and eerie avant-garde textures.
Their sonic landscape breathes alongside the show’s striking aesthetic and cinematography. The direction of photography relies on a moody, desaturated color palette, capturing the rain-drenched Basque landscapes with cold, lingering shots. Setién and Rüdiger translate these stark visual shadows into audio, using minimalist instrumentation and ethereal vocals that mimic the dense fog and architectural isolation seen on screen.
Crucial to this fluid creative process was their seamless relationship with the director, David R Losada. The composers highlighted how remarkably easy, open, and fluid it was to collaborate with him. Instead of imposing rigid constraints, the director fostered an environment of absolute creative freedom, trusting their intuition completely. This mutual trust allowed the music to evolve naturally alongside the edit, resulting in a cohesive piece where story, lens, and sound merge into one single, chilling experience.
Elena Setién and Rüdiger already worked together in the composition of the soundtrack for Faisaien Irla (Pheasant Island), a border thriller celebrated at numerous international film festivals. Both artists are highly regarded Basque Country based indie multi-instrumentalists and songwriters. Setién, known for her sweeping vocal range, classically trained background, and acclaimed avant- garde jazz and singer-songwriting work in Copenhagen, and Chicago, pairs seamlessly with Rüdiger, a versatile multi-instrumentalist and prominent drummer deeply embedded in the Basque indie scene. Odol Ilargia recently premiered at the San Sebastian International Film Festival by EITB, Basque National Television.
